Vacancy: Costing Engineer

Introduction:

A well-established company operating in the manufacturing and agricultural infrastructure sector is seeking a detail-oriented Costing Engineer to join their dynamic team. The organisation supplies high-quality plastic components. The organisation supplies high-quality plastic components and delivers end-to-end solutions to the poultry and livestock farming industry, including the design and setup of poultry housing systems. This role offers the opportunity to be involved in both manufacturing and project-based costing within a technically innovative environment.

Job Purpose:

To ensure accurate product costing and pricing by analysing material, labour and overhead costs, and by supporting the finance and production teams with costing-related insights and reports.

REQUIREMENTS

Minimum education (essential):

  • Degree in Industrial Engineering, Cost and Management Accounting, or a related field

Minimum applicable experience (years):

  • 3 – 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment in a costing, process, or industrial engineering role.

Required nature of experience:

  • Product and process costing in a manufacturing setting
  • Bill of Materials (BOM) analysis and maintenance
  • Labour, material, and overhead cost analysis
  • Financial data interpretation and reporting

Skills and Knowledge (essential):

  • Strong numerical and analytical ability
  • Solid understanding of cost accounting principles
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (advanced level)
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles is advantageous

 

Area:

Pomona, Kempton Park and such other locations or destinations as determined by the Employer from time to time.

Other:

  • Proficient in Afrikaans
  • Own reliable transport and valid driver’s license
  • Willingness to work on-site daily

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

Product Costing and Analysis

  • Develop and maintain accurate standard costings for all manufactured and assembled products, including poultry system components and project builds.
  • Regularly analyse and report on cost variances related to material usage, labour efficiency, and overheads.
  • Collaborate with production, engineering, and procurement teams to verify cost inputs and update BOMs and routings.
  • Ensure accurate and timely updates to costing data to reflect changes in processes, materials, and suppliers.

Reporting and Cost Control

  • Generate detailed monthly and quarterly cost reports for management, highlighting key cost drivers and savings opportunities.
  • Conduct root cause analysis on significant cost variances and recommend corrective actions.
  • Assist in preparation of budgets, forecasts, and margin analysis reports.
  • Provide financial insight for project costing, capex evaluation, and feasibility studies.

ERP, BOM and Master Data Management

  • Maintain accurate product costing data within the ERP system, ensuring BOMs and routings reflect current manufacturing processes.
  • Perform regular audits of BOM structures and routings to ensure data integrity.
  • Support ERP costing module improvements and testing when system changes are implemented.
  • Collaborate with supply chain and engineering teams to implement new materials and processes efficiently in the system.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with procurement to evaluate supplier pricing trends and their impact on product costs.
  • Support the sales team by providing accurate cost inputs for new quotes and tenders.
  • Engage with engineering and R&D teams to cost new products and prototypes.
  • Liaise with project teams to monitor and manage costing for turnkey poultry house installations.

Continuous Improvement and Strategic Input

  • Participate in lean initiatives and drive cost-reduction strategies through process optimisation and waste elimination.
  • Identify automation opportunities in cost tracking and reporting processes.
  • Contribute to strategic discussions by providing cost-based insights into product profitability and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Keep up to date with industry costing practices and suggest relevant improvements or innovations.
